General Surgery
We offer several surgical options from routine spays and neuters to more complex surgeries like luxated patella repair and foreign body removal. Each pet is given individual attention and anesthetic monitoring. We monitor pulse oximetry (percent of oxygen in the bloodstream) and have a technician on hand during every procedure.
Laser Surgery
Southwest Animal Hospital has provided laser surgery for over 10 years. This technique replaces the traditional scalpel and provides significant advantages to patients during a variety of surgical procedures. This includes less pain and a quicker recovery time.
Laser Therapy
A drug free, surgery free approach for pain managment. Therapy Lasers have been scientifically proven and successfully treat acute pain, chronic conditions, and post-operative pain. Laser therapy is a clinically proven modality in both human and veterinary medicine. Laser therapy treatment is safe, painless and fast. Laser therapy utilizes the body’s own healing powers by stimulating cellular activity. Despite short treatment times, laser therapy treatments initiate a healing process that continues to actively reduce inflammation for up to 24 hours after treatment.
Ultrasound
Southwest Animal Hospital is proud to offer on-site ultrasound services for pets of the Jefferson City area. Ultrasound technology will allow for early detection of potential life-threatening abnormalities in the digestive, reproductive, and cardiovascular system. This early, prompt detection is often key to successful treatment and quicker recoveries. Our trained staff will conduct ultrasound testing in hospital, allowing for prompt diagnosis and treatment of your pet.
Digital Radiology
X-rays are an essential tool that provide valuable information about a pet’s internal organs and bone structure. This helps the doctor diagnose and treat problems quickly. With digital radiography, X-rays are available within 10 seconds and evaluated in-house for immediate results.
MicrochippingEach year millions of pets become lost or displaced. In fact, 1 in 3 pets will go missing sometime in their lives.
To help reduce the risk of losing your pet, we recommend, The Avid® Microchip. This is an implantable medical device that safely and permanently identifies your pet with its own identification number. The chip is as small as a grain of rice, which is injected under the skin with a hypodermic needle. All you have to do is register your pet’s number into the national data-base with AVID.
Dental Care
Annual dental cleanings are recommended for both cats and dogs 3 years and older. Dental cleanings consist of scaling tartar and plaque off the teeth and above the gum line. Next, the entire surface of each tooth is polished. This creates a smooth surface which helps prevent bacteria and plaque formation. We then apply a fluoride treatment to help fortify the tooth enamel, which is especially important in cats because they are more likely to develop cavities.
Preventive Care
Preventative care is an essential part of your pet’s life. It helps the doctor detect and prevent or mitigate/treat disease or injury.
- Wellness examinations
- Vaccinations
- Parasite Control
- Heartworm exam and prevention
- Age-related Health monitoring
Wellness Exams
At Southwest Animal Hospital, we recommend examinations twice a year. A health exam will help determine the general well-being of your pet and can identify potential problems. Early detection of diseases can improve your pet's chances of successful treatment.
Vaccinations
Vaccines are one of the most important preventative care measures for your pet. Vaccinations protect your pets from numerous disease threats such as bordatella, parvovirus, distemper, and rabies in dogs and upper respiratory diseases, leukemia, and rabies in cats – just to mention a few. Many of these diseases can be passed on to humans, so vaccines help protect human health as well.
